Science Fun Facts for the week of February 1-7:

Did you know?

Costa Rica is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and has more than 200 identifiable volcanoes dating back over 65 million years.

  • One of Costa Rica’s tallest and most visited volcanoes, Poas Volcano is home to the world’s largest and most acidic lagoon. The lagoon sits inside one of Poas’s craters and is over 900 feet deep with a layer of liquid sulfur at the bottom.
  • The Ring of Fire that includes Costa Rica isn’t exactly a ring. It’s more like a 25,000-mile horseshoe of volcanoes and seismic activity. It stretches from the southern tip of South America, along the Coast of North America, across the Bering Strait, and down through Japan and New Zealand. There are a total of 452 volcanoes nested in that arc!
  • Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano is the most active volcano in Central America and one of the 10 most active volcanoes in the world. Its last major eruption was in 1968, but it still emits a continuous flow of lava and hot gas. Because it is so active, Arenal is also home to some of the youngest rocks on the face of the Earth.
