Singapore Sets the Pace for Developing Nations
Singapore’s story is that of the underdog – humble beginnings followed by a concentrated fight that has led the country to a momentous peak. In 1819, Singapore was a relatively uninhabited and underdeveloped trading colony. After being expelled from the federation of Malaysia – by unanimous vote, no less – Singapore has emerged as one of the most prosperous countries in the world.
What makes Singapore – and Southeast Asia, in general – a valuable travel destination for business students is the variety of business endeavors found in the region. Singapore is home to more than 70 internationally-renowned water companies and, as such, is recognized as a global hydrohub. Singapore is also a leading force in the high-tech industry with more than 80 of the world’s top 100 software and services companies – such as Hewlett Packard, Cisco and Oracle – having new regional headquarters in the country.
Seated between Malaysia and Indonesia, Singapore is a convenient flight to these destinations and others that offer a contrasting view of how developing countries can prosper. While Singapore boasts a booming tech-savvy culture, Malaysia, for example, offers a unique approach to the banking system, which draws on Muslim influence instead of Singapore’s Asian-based structure. Thailand is focusing efforts on cyber resilience, while Indonesia is heavily pursuing and developing systems that cultivate renewable energy sources. Vietnam, whose exports include clothes, shoes, marine products, electronics, and wooden products, is quickly creating strong competition for China as a leader in outsourcing goods.
