Our phones go everywhere we go, so of course you will be packing them in your carry on when you leave on your WorldStrides program! While you should check with your provider on usage and fees associated with traveling abroad, travel apps can help your trip run smoothly.
Here are six of our favorite travel apps.
Finding your way around a new city, especially when abroad, can be intimidating. Citymapper utilizes public transportation like trains and buses to help you find the best route, and also gives walking and taxi routes. It alerts you when you reach your stop, and you can even check subway and train times offline in some cities! While not available everywhere, the cities Citymapper covers is rapidly growing.
XE Currency is one of the most robust currency converters on the market. It is updated constantly and offers live exchange rates. It can also store the most recent rates so you can use them when offline. It’s a great app to have on hand when comparing the dollar to the currency used in your destination.
Returning to the U.S.? Mobile Passport is officially authorized by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and lets you skip the regular line to enter the country. Download the app and add your passport information by scanning your passport with your phone’s camera. Mobile Passport is accepted at 20 airports in the United States – check ahead to see if your airport of arrival supports the app! http://mobilepassport.us/
While we encourage you to immerse yourself in the culture and try out your language skills, sometimes, you need a little help. The Google Translate app provides translations for 103 different languages and allows you to listen to translations out loud, translate dictation, and even translate your handwriting on-screen. You can star words and phrases for offline use, or view dictionary results for a single word or phrase.
If you’re looking to practice the language of your destination ahead of time, download Duolingo. It offers beginner language courses in a wide selection of languages and is a great way to help you brush up on that Italian, French, or Spanish before your flight.
You might find yourself in multiple time zones when you travel. Circa is a great time zone tracker that will tell you what time it is not only where you are, but where you’re headed. You can also add your home time zone.
