What is the Diamond Jubilee?

Did you see the Oscar winning film, “The King’s Speech”?

Well if you haven’t, you definitely should, Colin Firth gives an amazing performance as the bumbling King George VI. If you have, then you would have seen the portrayal of a young Queen Elizabeth.

At first it didn’t occur to me that this film, based in the mid-1930s, was depicting the current monarch of the UK. I just enjoyed the over-dramatized
Winston Churchill and unflattering women’s attire.

But with the celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee in full swing, it dawned on me how old she actually is. At 86 years old, Queen Elizabeth
is only the second monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee. What is the Diamond Jubilee exactly you may ask? The Diamond Jubilee celebrates Queen Elizabeth’s 60 years of rule, and they are celebrating in style.
Known as, The Central Weekend, the Jubilee celebrations start on Saturday, June 2nd and run until Tuesday, June 5th.

The festivities kick off Saturday with a visit to the horse track at Epsom Derby. Sunday is chock-full of excitement with a Jubilee Lunch in the form of
street parties and picnic lunches and then the Thames Jubilee Pageant in the afternoon. The pageant will feature one thousand boats assembled from all over
the United Kingdom with the Royal Barge, the Spirit of Chartwell, as the centerpiece. Monday’s big event is the BBC concert at Buckingham Palace with it
all wrapping up on Tuesday with a service at St. Paul’s Cathedral, a procession to Buckingham Palace and of course a Balcony appearance.
